From Classroom to Craft: Meet The Jewellery Brand Born in a Copenhagen Schoolroom

We were always told that being three female founders with somewhat similar educational backgrounds would be a weakness. But instead, we turned it into our greatest strength. It all began as a simple school project at the Copenhagen School of Design and Technology, where we were asked to invent a fictitious company to sell our own jewellery. Our shared love for the ocean, sustainable design, and craftsmanship instantly drew us together, and before long, we’d found our rhythm as a design team. We called the company AKVA, and soon after, the first core pieces of our Signature Collection were born. They were popular — so popular, in fact, that people began reaching out to buy them for real.

So, we kept going. We continued shaping and developing new pieces from the AKVA universe throughout our internships, exchange programmes, and right up until graduation — each of us earning a bachelor’s degree in Jewellery, Technology and Business. By then, our brand, our company, and our friendship had evolved beyond fiction. We were real — fully functioning and officially AKVA Jewellery. Seven years later, we’ve just moved into an incredible boutique in the heart of Copenhagen.

People often ask why we think we’ve been successful. The truth is simple: it all comes down to relationships. We know each other inside out — our strengths, our quirks, our ways of thinking — and we each play a vital role in what AKVA has become. Over the years, we’ve shared everything: grief, illness, pregnancies, heartbreak, and new love stories. For us, it’s always been important to make space for every part of life while keeping focus on the bigger picture.

By leaning into our differences and trusting one another’s instincts, we’ve built a business founded on friendship, positivity, and faith — in ourselves, in each other, and in the work we create. There were years when we worked on AKVA by day and other jobs by night, keeping the dream alive until it could sustain itself — dedication not only to the company, but to each other. 

We’re proud that the brand has grown alongside us into the women we are today — evolving from a “humble beginning” in a classroom to our first workshop and showroom: a charming loft with crooked floors, soft light, and views of the royal gardens in central Copenhagen. Now, as we prepare to move into our new boutique on Bredgade, one of the most famous streets in the city, we see it as the next chapter — a space where we can welcome our community into AKVA’s world of silver, gold, and diamonds. Whatever comes next, we’re ready for it — grounded in the same trust, creativity, and friendship that started it all.
